The world is getting smaller every day, and the boundaries between countries seem to be disappearing. People are frequently moving to other countries, leaving their family and loved ones behind. Businesses are going international in the a blink of an eye. All of this is making our money international too. Sending money to another country is now easier than is has ever been. International fund transfers have become part of daily life, slowly moving from banks to online websites. Your money can now move faster than ever. Lately, I have come across many people who are now living in the UK and wish to send money back to their families in India. This article is for all those people looking for the best online payment option to send money back home.
Find the best online service provider
There are many criteria by which a service provider can be judged. The most important one is cost-effectiveness. When an amount is sent, how much amount is received by the recipient after all of the fees? This depends on how much the provider is charging for the transfer and how good the exchange rates they provide. If they deduct a big amount as their fee, there is less money left over. Also if the fee is optimum but the rates are very poor, the remaining money is considerably less after the currency conversion. If a service gives you the best results and saves the most money, it should be your number one choice.
To pick the best of these services, I chose several service providers and sent three different money transfers through each. These services are popular in the money moving market; they are TransferWise, Western Union, WorldRemit, Xendpay.com, and Skrill. I sent GBP 100, GBP 1000 and GBP 10,000 using each of their services and recorded the final remaining amount. I also noted down the fees for bank-to-bank transfers only (It may be a little more expensive if you are planning to use a debit or credit card).
It is clear that for smaller transfers, TransferWise and Xendpay have the best results. For GBP 1000, Western Union gave the best result with Xendpay in a close second. Western Union was also the best for sending GBP 10,000, leaving me with the most money after the transfer.
|Amount sent||TransferWise||Western Union||WorldRemit||Xendpay.com||Skrill|
|GBP 100||INR 8,940.96||INR 8,868.03||INR 8,792.48||INR 8,940.31||INR 8,864.61|
|GBP 1,000||INR 89,818.72||INR 90,226.14||INR 89,531.48||INR 90,035.27||INR 88,646.10|
|GBP 10,000||INR 898,589.09||INR 903,979.00||INR 896,921.48||INR 900,352.71||INR 886,461.03|
Transfer fees and exchange rates
If you check out each transfer fee, you will see how each of these companies ended up with different results. At GBP 100, TransferWise and Xendpay have the lowest fee because of the way it is calculated. While for the larger amounts, Western Union gave the best output. The exchange rates offered by all of these services were all spectacular, but TransferWise offered the best exchange rates of all. When the rates were compared to the real exchange rates, TransferWise came the closest. Its low fee and great exchange rates have made it a great choice to send small amounts. However, for sending big amounts to India, Western Union would be the best choice. I paid almost nothing for sending GBP 10,000. TransferWise, Xendpay and Skrill all have high fees for larger amounts while the fees of Western Union and WorldRemit remain similar for any amount.
|GBP 100||GBP 1.00||GBP 1.90||GBP 1.99||GBP 1.00||GBP 1.90|
|GBP 1,000||GBP 5.47||GBP 1.90||GBP 1.99||GBP 3.00||GBP 19.00|
|GBP 10,000||GBP 50.25||GBP 0.00||GBP 1.99||GBP 30.00||GBP 190.00|
